Can anyone offer some Running Tips or advice for marathon training?

I’m considering running a marathon next June of 2010 and am thinking about registering. I can comfortably run 8 – 10 miles now without feeling any major pain or aches. Is this good enough to prep for a marathon in the next couple of months? I’ve never ran past 14 miles before, but I think I can up my training schedule and continue to get better. What do you think? btw I am 17 and am a college student.

Many marathons have a minimum age of 18 — you’d first need to ensure you’re eligible in whichever one you want to run.

If you can occasionally pull an 8-10 miler, yes, you can probably train to at least complete a marathon. The general guideline for beginning first marathon training is to have had a regular running routine going for at least a year, and to be able to regularly pull 3-5 mile runs without major issue. If you can already handle long runs up to 8-10 miles without collapsing, you wouldn’t be *that* far away from stretching your occasional long runs upward. At that point, it starts to be about how well you want to complete it over if you’ll be able to.

At your point I’d probably start looking around for half marathons, and looking into if you truly want the risks of a full marathon at your age or not. While still developing in particular, a full marathon can be more of a risk. Training for one can also take up more time, and there are limited life opportunities in your teens you might not want to miss out on. Full marathons will still be there in a few years, but educational opportunities, social opportunities, etc. will change.
